Identify what is opening

Note the application's name and whether it opens a visible window or only an icon near the clock. If the name is unfamiliar, inspect its publisher and installed-app details before making changes. A utility supplied with a mouse, audio device or backup service may have a purpose that is not obvious from its title.

In Windows 11, open Settings, then Apps and Startup. Microsoft documents this list as one way to control applications registered with a startup task. Task Manager's Startup apps view provides another route and can show additional impact information.

Turn off the entry for an application you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. This changes automatic launching; it does not remove the program or prevent you from opening it when needed. Save work and restart to check the result.

If the window still returns

Look inside the application's own preferences for a setting such as launch at sign-in. The wording varies. Some applications also restore a previous session, which can look like startup behavior even when you have changed a different setting.

If the application is not in the Windows list, follow its developer's documented instructions. Startup can be configured in more than one way, so the absence of an entry does not prove Windows is malfunctioning.

Avoid deleting unfamiliar shortcuts, services or registry entries in an attempt to catch everything. A broad change can affect updating, device controls or security software. On a work or school computer, the behavior may be managed intentionally; ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass it.

Keep the automatic jobs that earn their place

A backup client or synchronization tool may need to start automatically to perform the job you expect. If you disable it, confirm how and when that job will run instead. A quieter startup is not worth discovering later that recent files were never backed up.

Change only a few entries at a time and keep a note of what you disabled. If a useful function stops appearing, you can restore the relevant entry without guessing.

After a few normal restarts, review whether the change has improved the beginning of your day. An application that opens once a month probably does not need a place at every sign-in. One that you use immediately each morning may be convenient there. The list should reflect that distinction, rather than being entirely on or entirely off.
