Try the application before making it the default

Right-click a known file and look for Open with. Choose an installed application that supports the format, using a one-time option if you are still deciding. Check that it displays the content correctly and offers the features you need.

Opening a file in a different application does not convert the file. A PDF remains a PDF, and a spreadsheet may still use features that the alternate program cannot fully handle. If you edit and save through another app, work on a copy until you have checked the result.

If no suitable application appears, install one from its official source or a trusted system store. Do not choose an unfamiliar download simply because a search result promises to open every file type.

Set the association by file type

In Windows 11, open Settings, then Apps and Default apps. Search for the extension, such as .pdf, and choose the application you want to use for that type. Microsoft also provides a route through an application's own list of supported file and link types.

Check related types separately where needed. Choosing a program for one image format does not necessarily change every other image format. A browser default can also involve link types rather than ordinary document files.

If you are unsure of an extension, inspect the file's properties or enable filename extensions in File Explorer. Avoid changing the letters at the end of the name to force an association. Renaming .pdf to another extension does not turn the contents into that other format.

Confirm what changed

Close the test file and open it again from File Explorer. It should now use the chosen application. Try a second file of the same type so you know you changed a general association rather than only the current opening.

A managed computer may restrict default applications, and some software updates can prompt you to review them. If a choice repeatedly changes on a work device, ask the administrator before trying more invasive changes.

Keep the default tied to the action you perform most often. A lightweight viewer may be suitable for everyday reading even if you occasionally use a larger editor through Open with. You do not need to make the most capable application responsible for every routine double-click.
